While the name OzTruckers may lead operators to believe that this new service doesn’t cater to them, they would be sorely mistaken.

Launching yesterday, OzTruckers offers truck drivers and bus operators all around Australia the chance to benefit from a variety of savings, ranging from fuel to retail.

  • Subscribe to our free weekly newsletter to receive the latest news and classifieds from Australasia’s bus and coach industry
  • Don’t miss a second and subscribe to our monthly ABC magazine

It’s subscription process allows drivers to access a wide range of benefits, starting with an 8.5 cents per litre discount on fuel.

By paying a monthly subscription fee, operators will be able to access these savings, with parts, repairs, tyres, workwear, phone plans, subscriptions, insurance and financing, travel and food and beverages all part of the OzTruckers discounts.

Image: OzTruckers

“During my recent time in the industry, I got to spend a lot of time talking to owner drivers and smaller transport companies – I found they had plenty of pain points when it came to expenses and funding their lives on the road,” Oz Truckers founder Andrew ‘Drew’ Davis says.

“I decided to create Oz Truckers – a place to provide discounts, rewards and enticing offers for anything that adds value to a driver’s life.”

Initially, the company aims to deliver helpful offers that focus on smaller companies, with the goal being to evolve the subscription service to something that also encompasses larger-scale fleets.

For businesses, the membership is tax deductible, adding more value to savings.

“We charge up to $79 a month for membership, with all of the value going back to our drivers and our carrier base. We’ve already calculated that drivers could save up to $500 a month on fuel alone by using our savings, so you already make money out of the membership before looking at the parts and servicing side,” Davis says.

Through monthly or annual membership, the Oz Truckers team will continue growing the benefit partnership network to deliver more savings to operators moving forward.

Davis is also planning a $29 a month membership that will be solely based on lifestyle benefits, meaning drivers who are already on employee benefit schemes with their businesses can still enjoy external savings with Oz Truckers.

“If you work for someone, they may put carriers on schemes that give you benefits on fuel and more,” Davis says.

“So we have an option outside of these core savings where drivers can just get access to lifestyle benefits – someone may buy this for themselves, or they may push their business to look after drivers by setting them up on the employee benefits lifestyle membership.”

Wales Heavy Vehicle Repair began as a family-run workshop on the outskirts of Sydney, built on a foundation of hard work, skill and a deep respect for the transport industry. Local truck drivers trusted the team to keep their vehicles moving, knowing that every repair was done with care and precision.

Through dedication, craftsmanship and an unwavering commitment to keeping businesses on the road, Wales grew into a respected name in heavy vehicle repairs. Over time, the team recognised an opportunity to expand beyond trucks, applying their expertise to a growing demand for specialised bus repairs.

Now, with more than 40 years of expertise, Wales Heavy Vehicle Repair has evolved into a leading national network, combining industry heritage with cutting-edge repair solutions.

“Over the past nine months, we have focused on refreshing our brand – not just updating our name, but modernising our facilities, processes and service experience,” Wales Heavy Vehicle Repairs general manager Martin Dickinson told ABC.

“This transformation reinforces our commitment to heavy vehicle and bus operators nationwide.”

As part of this evolution, Wales has rebranded all facilities under a single national identity, ensuring customers experience consistent, high-quality repairs, no matter where they are in Australia.

“At Wales, heavy is our duty. That means we’re always pushing for better ways to serve our customers, minimise downtime and deliver precision repairs with every job,” Dickinson says.

Recognising that repairing heavy vehicles is about more than just fixing damage, Wales has invested in upgrading customer facilities and service innovations to enhance the experience. This included building enhanced customer lounge areas that provide a relaxed, professional environment and echo what Dickinson describes as an “OEM feeling”.

The company has also introduced a handover showroom where clients can personally collect their fully restored buses, allowing time for any customer questions and for the technicians to emphasise the quality and pride in their craft.

“Wales has also dedicated time to streamlining our internal processes, introducing dedicated assessment bays that make our quoting more efficient and ensure we maintain transparency in our service,” Dickinson says.

“We have also worked on improving workshop flow to reduce repair times and minimise customer downtime.

“We know that having a bus off the road is a major inconvenience for operators, so we’ve designed every step of our repair process to get them back in service as quickly as possible.”

Before a Wales repair

As Australia’s transport industry transitions toward zero-emissions vehicles, Wales has invested in specialised electric and alternate-powered bus repair capabilities.

“Over the past 12 months, we’ve been training our teams nationwide to handle electric and hydrogen-powered buses,” Dickinson says.

“We’ve installed a dedicated EV charging station at our Smithfield site and are integrating advanced repair techniques to support the shift to green transport.”

By proactively upgrading its capabilities, Wales is positioning itself as the go-to repairer for electric buses nationwide, ensuring that operators can transition to new technologies with confidence.

Since joining AMA Group in 2019, Wales has expanded its national reach and broadened its capabilities to become a true one-stop shop for heavy vehicle repairs.

“Our partnership with AMA has given us the ability to service entire fleets, from light vehicles to trucks and buses under one trusted network,” Dickinson says.

This reach is further strengthened by AMA Group’s partnership with Malaysian bus manufacturer Gemilang, bringing local bus assembly to Australia for the first time in Gemilang’s history.

Gemilang executive general manager Pan Jun Jie told ABC that AMA Group and Wales Heavy Vehicle Repair were the natural choice for this partnership.

“Gemilang chose AMA Group as its strategic partner due to AMA’s extensive expertise in the Australian automotive and heavy vehicle sector, particularly in bus repairs and refurbishment,” Jun Jie says.

“With a nationwide presence and well-established Wales heavy collision repair facilities, AMA Group provides the necessary infrastructure and skilled workforce to support local assembly, ensuring compliance with Australian standards and regulations.”

After a Wales repair

Through this collaboration, AMA Group will integrate Gemilang’s innovative aluminium bus body kits into its existing Wales heavy collision repair facilities nationwide, leveraging its extensive expertise in bus repairs to support local assembly.

Gemilang, which has more than 35 years of experience and has supplied bus body kits to more than 15 markets, including Australia, Singapore and the USA, sees this partnership as a key step in advancing sustainable transport solutions in Australia.

“By leveraging AMA’s operational capabilities and after-sales service network, Gemilang can ensure the seamless assembly, delivery and long-term support for its aluminium bus body solutions, strengthening its foothold in Australia’s growing electric bus industry,” Jun Jie says.

This collaboration will enable participation in government bus tenders across all Australian states and territories and aligns with national sustainability goals by advancing green mobility, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring reliable after-sales support for electric buses built through the partnership.

Currently, Wales operates eight heavy vehicle repair sites across Townsville, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Victoria, South Australia and Perth, with dedicated bus and truck facilities also at Smithfield, NSW.

“While we started in Sydney, our services are now available nationwide,” Dickinson says.

With fully equipped facilities across the country, Wales is ready to support the growth of Australia’s bus industry, whether it involves large-scale fleet repairs, new vehicle assembly or electric bus servicing.

“At Wales, heavy is our duty – both today and into the future,” Dickinson says.

“We invite bus operators to partner with us as we set new benchmarks in repair excellence and sustainable fleet management.”

Construction has finally been completed on the $40 million Tuggerah Station upgrade, designed to make public transport safer and more accessible.

While the station itself received a makeover, with new lifts, footbridge and concourse, those switching to buses also took home a win.

The exisiting bus stops received much needed upgrades, with new footpaths, enhanced lighting, CCTV and pedestrian signage around the area.

These changes mark the first upgrades at Tuggerah since ramps and a footbridge were added in 1988.

Central Coast commuters now have a train station that is easy to use for all passengers – especially people with disability, older people, people with prams or luggage and others who might be experiencing mobility problems.

“The Central Coast is a growing community with many workers commuting to Sydney to work,” NSW premier Chris Minns says.

“We have delivered the upgraded train station and transport interchange that Tuggerah deserves.

“Thousands of Tuggerah commuters will benefit from this upgrade – the first major upgrade in nearly 40 years for this station.”

These latest works come as part of the government’s $800 million Safe Accessible Transport program, which is accelerating train station upgrades across the network.

Thousands of commuters will benefit from the rollout of the program designed to make public transport safer and more accessible, particularly for vulnerable members of the community.

“This Tuggerah Station upgrade is another milestone in the Minns Labor Government’s plans to build a more inclusive NSW,” disability inclusion minister Kate Washington says.

“Investing in accessible public transport is an investment in an inclusive society, where everyone can travel with dignity and independence.

“Upgrades like this don’t just improve infrastructure—they improve lives by enabling everyone to fully participate in their communities.”

VDI Australia, the local distributor of Yutong buses and coaches, has announced a “bold restructure” of its national sales and aftersales team.

The distributor says the restructure allows VDI to reinforce its promise to Australian operators to provide reliable advice, seamless delivery and long-term support.

The addition of two well-known industry people in Robert Smart, previously from air-conditioning supplier DENSO, and Logan Hoser, who spent 20 years at Scania Australia, is part of the shuffle.

“This is more than an internal reshuffle – it’s a reflect of how VDI is preparing its people, processes and partners for a transport landscape in transition — whether operators are trialling electric for the first time, expanding a full zero-emission fleet, or looking for proven performance with Cummins Euro 6 diesel technology,” VDI Australia says in a statement.

VDI’s restructured national sales team is built around the idea of delivering deep regional knowledge combined with nationally aligned support.

Each region is now supported by business development managers and account managers, backed by a national sales operations specialist to keep communication smooth and customer needs on track.

From seasoned leaders to strategic new appointments, VDI national sales manager Sara Clark says each person has been chosen to meet the specific needs of customers in their region.

“While our newly structured team brings together over 235 years of combined industry experience, this shift isn’t about looking back — it’s about being ready for what’s next,” Clark says.

She says Hoser and Smart bring “fresh energy and strong reputations” from their regions, with their arrival coinciding with the transition for long-time sales leader Peter Verbrugge to a strategic business development manager role across Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

Also part of the shuffle is the move of Brendan Godber from leading the aftersales division to taking up a business development role.

Out west, VDI’s national footprint includes Mike Kennedy and Scott Lane in Western Australia.

“This team’s experience spans real-world operations, fleet planning, compliance, and delivery — giving us the insight to ask smarter questions early, anticipate the challenges our customers face, and support them through every stage of the journey,” Clark says.

“It’s that blend of practical expertise and forward focus that makes the difference, especially as operators navigate fleet transitions and shifting regional requirements.”

  • Subscribe to our free weekly newsletter to receive the latest news and classifieds from Australasia’s bus and coach industry
  • Don’t miss a second and subscribe to our monthly ABC magazine

VDI has also built a responsive service package for regional areas, with the company investing in structure that includes onboarding guides, training videos and technical documentation.

This shift is led by Sam Gibson, who recently joined as national service manager following Brendan Godber’s move into sales.

“Our goal is to ensure the sales journey transitions seamlessly into long-term support,” Gibson says.

“That means making it easy for customers to access the information, training, and service they need — wherever they are.”

VDI’s aftersales support network reflects the same regional depth seen in its sales team. In NSW and the ACT, a well-established team manages everything from warranty and training to long-term service partnerships. In Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, growing service agent networks are supported by centralised technical resources — ensuring smaller operators receive the same attention to detail as larger fleets.

Queensland and the Northern Territory benefit from mobile servicing and close coordination with remote communities, while Western Australia continues to be well supported by a team with long-standing local experience and a deep understanding of the demands placed on vehicles in the region.

“It’s our team who lead the relationship from day one,” Gibson says.

“Operators deal directly with VDI for delivery, training, support — everything. Yutong’s factory team backs us up where needed, but the accountability and consistency starts with us.

“We’re building a service experience that’s not person-dependent — it’s systematic. From tailored onboarding to coordinated delivery and operational support, the customer journey is more streamlined than ever.”

Clark says this change to VDI’s national structure comes at a critical moment.

“This shift couldn’t come at a better time,” says Clark.

“With government led zero-emission bus fleet integration, growing demand from national operators, and increasing pressure for consistency across states, customers are looking for more than a good deal — they’re looking for partners who can deliver reliable vehicles at scale, without losing the local touch.”

VDI’s restructure is also a tangible example of its brand values — known internally as “DRIVEN”: Dedication, Responsibility, Innovation, Value, Excellence and Nurture.

“You’ll find our values built into the way our team works with customers every day,” Clark says.

The national restructure has allowed VDI to better match its growing product portfolio — from battery-electric buses to proven Cummins Euro 6 models — with a team built to support operators across the full lifecycle.

And while the vehicles may be front and centre, Gibson says the people behind them are the difference between a one-time deal and a lasting partnership.

“VDI is not just focused on getting customers into the right bus — the team is committed to supporting operators through the entire journey. From planning and delivery to long-term performance, VDI is there to help drive the future forward,” he says.

The South Australian government has today announced it has ordered 60 brand new 100 per cent full battery electric buses and revealed plans to create a zero-emissions passenger transport network.

The new bus fleet bodies will come with a Scania chassis and a Volgren body, with the infrastructure to charge the buses to be installed at the Morphettville depot.

The buses will be delivered progressively throughout the second half of this year and the start of 2026, with there currently only being the one trial full battery electric bus operating on the state’s bus network.

Alongside this, the SA government has also appointed two global engineering advisory firms to develop detailed planning for creating a zero-emissions passenger transport network.

Mott MacDonald and WSP will help develop the detailed business cases to plan towards the zero-emissions operations that will span across both bus and passenger rail networks.

This work will consolidate the large body of planning and feasibility analysis already done by the state government.

It also follows a series of meetings held by SA infrastructure and transport minister Tom Koutsantonis with some of the world’s biggest rail companies at Berlin’s InnoTrans 2024 to focus on rolling out more battery electric trains in the state.

The Adelaide Metro bus fleet currently consists of just over 1000 vehicles powered by a mix of diesel, hybrid, battery electric and natural gas powertrains, with two hydrogen buses currently on trial. As of September 2022, procurement of new diesel-only buses has ceased, and all new vehicles are now either diesel-electric hybrids or battery electric.

With transport being the largest single source of emissions in the state and the state government committed to reducing emissions by at least 60 per cent of 2005 levels by 2030, the business cases are expected to be completed early next year to allow for the roll-out of more green buses in South Australia.

BusNSW has officially announced it will be hosting the 2026 Australasian Bus and Coach Expo in Sydney.

The state association says the event will be held on Wednesday July 15 and Thursday July 16 next year at The Dome and Halls at Sydney Showgrounds.

BusNSW executive director Matt Threlkeld has confirmed it’ll once again host the premier industry event which forms part of a four-year cycle and follows the successful 2022 expo held in Sydney.

“The dates have been carefully selected after considering NSW school holidays, venue availability and other key industry events,” he says.

“Our goal is to maximise attendance by operators and provide attendees with the opportunity to experience the latest advancements in bus and coach technology, including zero-emission transport solutions.”

The Expo will feature over 13,000 square metres of displays, showcasing the latest vehicles, technology and innovations across the passenger transport sector. Leading manufacturers and suppliers will demonstrate the latest products and services, with a strong focus on enhancing safety for drivers, passengers and the community.

“The timing of the Expo aligns with the fleet procurement pipeline associated with the Greater Sydney Stage 1 Zero Emissions Bus Program, as well as continued fleet replacement orders for outer metropolitan, and rural and regional bus services in NSW,” Threlkeld says.

“Additionally, strong growth in the tourism and charter markets is driving increased demand for new buses and coaches, making July 2026 an ideal time to display vehicles.”

BusNSW anticipates strong engagement from operators, suppliers and government agencies, positioning the Expo as a must-attend event for domestic and international industry stakeholders.

“We will soon commence discussions with our partners, associate members, and industry suppliers regarding bookings for booths and vehicle display areas,” Threlkeld says.

The Expo will also feature two networking events, including a welcome function in Tuesday July 14 and an industry dinner on the night of July 15.

“If buses or coaches are your business, mark Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 July 2026 in your calendar and start planning your visit to Sydney for the Expo,” Threlkeld says.

Suppliers, operators, and industry stakeholders can stay informed in the lead-up to the Australasia Bus and Coach Expo 2026 by visiting the official Expo website here.

Suppliers interested in exhibiting at the Expo can complete an EOI form on the Expo website.

New South Wales based operator Busways has announced the appointment of a new Zero-Emissions Bus Transition Manager to the team as it hosted Transport for NSW at three of its depots.

The new appointment, Siddarth Rallapalli, hosted the TfNSW Macquarie Park bus depot delivery team on site visits at three Busways depots.

For the tours, Penrith manager Georgette Golding joined Rallapalli and head of assets and safety Chris Wolf to lead the tour of Busways’ custom-built Penrith depot.

From driver workflows to integrating zero-emissions buses, the tour showed the TfNSW team the ropes, with their feedback labelling it “an invaluable experience to see the inner workings of the different depots, the site constraints and alternative layouts used”.

Following this, the property team brought TfNSW to the Willoughby and Ryde depots that are Busways operated but government owned.

Since transitioning into the Region 7 contract in 2022, Busways says it has made improvements to safety equipment, driver facilities and training rooms to help with driver attraction and retention, with more renovation plans to come.

“The Transport team were particularly interested in our depot layouts, the reasoning behind our design choices, and how we plan for efficient workflows across admin and operations control offices, driver facilities, workshops, bus washing and fuelling, and bus movement in the depot,” Busways says.

“It had us thinking about how much goes into depot design. We’ve learned over 80 years of building and retrofitting depots that efficiency and sustainability are key. But just as important is creating spaces that people want to work in – spaces that make a difference in attracting and retaining talent in our industry.

“With 20 depots of varying ages and designs, modernising them is never simple, but it’s a challenge Busways takes seriously.

“These visits are part of Busways’ consulting role to Transport’s Public Transport Project team for development of the new all-electric Macquarie Park depot in Region 7.”
