It’s go time for Race Day 2 of Rocky Mountain Race Week 2024 and we’re LIVE from the Texas Motorplex in Ennis. With a quickest pass of 6.81 seconds at 217 miles per hour, this is a fast field even though it was 100 degrees outside in Tulsa. Today it is expected to get near 100 as well, but we’re still expecting lots of great racing action. So tell your friends, and click the link below to watch!

It’s time for Rocky Mountain Race Week folks, and that means 5 days of drag and drive action going on LIVE right here at BANGshift.com. We’ll be bringing you the action from all 5 days of racing, PLUS on road streaming action as well throughout the week. We start off Sunday June 23rd at Tulsa Raceway Park, then spend Monday on a beautiful drive through Oklahoma and Texas before hitting the famed Texas Motorplex in Ennis on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday we’re at Thunder Valley Raceway Park in Noble Oklahoma, and Thursday we make the trek to Mo-Kan Dragway for day 4 racing action. Friday we’re back at Tulsa Raceway Park for several big money heads up shootouts and the bragging rights for who will be crowned champions for Rocky Mountain Race Week 2024!

Racing starts each day around 3pm Central and will go until the last car makes a pass around 11 pm each night. Parking Lot Piston Swap On Rocky Mountain Race Week 2024! Nobody Is More Hard Core Than Tom Bagguley From Britain!

I first met Tom Bagguley after he took off on vacation and flew across the pond to hang out with us on Rocky Mountain Race Week a couple years ago. Now he’s been back and forth a couple of times, bought a turbocharged, LS swapped, Fox Mustang sight unseen for cheap, and has been participating in these events with us all over the country. This dude is doing it on the cheap, having a great time, and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. On this year’s Rocky Mountain Race Week, he hurt a piston on day one and started out the trip by having to swap it out. In a parking lot. By himself. The dude is a legend, a monster, a dude, and we love him for it. Check out the Rocky Mountain Race Week highlight video on his piston swapping adventures below.

Tom is awesome and has done multiple Race Weeks and Drag and Drive events but this one started off a bit rough when he hurt a piston on day one. He swapped in a “new” one and made the 350 mile trip and laid down another pass to stay in the competition!

Kansas City’s BRAND NEW TRACK is Born! 1320 Video Makes Their First Visit To Flying H Drag Strip And This Place Is Awesome!

Flying H Drag Strip has been the talk of the mid-west drag racing community since they started breaking ground. With the latest in drag strip technology, this place promises to be epic with regards to performance. It’s got the flattest concrete possible, poured walls, great timing system, the best prep equipment, and so much more. It’s an amazing spot I can’t wait to visit, because everyone is talking about it. Recently, Kyle and the gang from 1320Video visited for the first time and were so impressed. Given the fact that Kansas City’s famed KCIR shut down years and years ago, and nearby Topeka has spent the last several years embroiled in controversy, ownership and management changes, and so much more everyone was really looking for something new. Well Flying H Drag Strip is just what the doctor ordered.

FASTEST PASS Day 1 Rocky Mountain Race Week 2024! Bryant Goldstone’s 6-second Twin Turbo AMC Javelin!

Bryant Gladstone is a bad ass. Not only because he has a pretty bitchin 6 second street car, but also because he’s doing back to back Drag and Drive events this year to prove just how hardcore he is. Our first stop on Rocky Mountain Race Week 2024 was Tulsa Raceway Park where the insane heat was hitting people and cars very hard. Bryant was suffering from some gremlins but made it count when he needed to and ultimately ran deep in the 6’s to make the quickest and fastest lap of Day One. This won’t be the last quick run for him this week, and we know he’s chomping at the bit to prove just how much of a badass this ride is.

Watch Ken “The Carolina Hooker” Regenthal Make A Lane Swapping Run At Shuffletown Dragway Circa 1989

This video was shot almost 33 years ago and it shows one of the coolest cars in what we’d call the second southern door slammer renaissance in the form of Ken Regenthal’s Carolina Hooker Corvette. This car, bought by Regenthal from Don Plemmons had an interesting life as it started out as a fairly mild piece and continued to morph into what you see here. It was this car that put Ken solidly on the southern door slammer map. All that being said this Corvette was at the end of its lifespan with Regenthal. As you will hear the announcer yell during the burnout procedure, Ken already had the new car at home and this one was for sale.

We showed you some video of guys like Scotty Cannon and others racing at Shuffletown a while back and we held onto this one because it captures a single run that is about as nutty as the pro mod class was back then. Between the burnout, the wheels up dry hop, the never-lift lane change he makes, and the elapsed time that was likely somewhere in the low five second range (eighth mile) this shows you why the class exploded like it did. The Carolina Hooker was a car to be feared far and wide back in the day and Regenthal is still at it today. He has a stick shift Corvette he races that is nearly as fast as the car you see here as well as a pro mod Corvette that he uses to compete all over the south with like the Big Dog Shootout at Piedmont and others.

You can see that this engine is mechanically fuel injected and he clearly has nitrous plumbed to it but we can’t see him purge the system so we’re not sure he ran on the bottle for this run or not. While chassis technology and engine technology continued to evolve and Regenthal went quicker and faster in later cars, we think this is a coolest Carolina Hooker in the lineage of the name. We dig the announcer in this clip for his delivery, although we don’t get an elapsed time.

Awesome Video: The Story of The Royal Bobcat Package As Told By Jim Wangers

I really dig Pontiacs. I grew up with a dad who liked them and there’s something that the brand really captured in the 1960s that still speaks to me today. Jim Wangers was one of the guys instrumental in taking the performance ethos of Pontiac to the masses and up until his very recent passing he was a tireless cheerleader for all the great stuff that the brand did 50+ years ago. In fact, he stars in this video, sharing the story of the famed “Royal Bobcat” package that was offered by Michigan dealer Royal Pontiac back in the day. There’s some neat stuff in the video, mainly that the dealer was closely tied to the factory and its engineers when they actually developed the package.

Really, the Royal Bobcat package was a set of established hot rodding tweaks. More timing, re-jetted carbs, fresh air intake, thinner head gaskets for more compression, etc. The beauty of it was that the engineering connection to Pontiac meant that the package was “factory approved” and did not mangle the warranty. It woke these things up for sure and on the streets and strip a Royal Bobcat package car could do some damage against the other muscle bound competition of the day.

Drag Racing Action Video: Southeast Gassers A/GAS Recap at Shadyside Dragway – Wheels Up Gasser Action!

The Southeast Gassers Association puts on some of the most fun drag racing in the world. It’s an awesome series with old school gassers being driven like God intended and they certainly know how to put on a show. That’s why every single venue is packed with spectators and racers. We love this series and one of our favorite things are the names and characters that have been created by the owners, drivers, and teams. With the ladies of the Southeast Gassers Association also playing a big part in the starting line antics and the looks of the series, it’s a full team effort and we dig it.

Here is a new video from our friend Lee Craft, aka Monday Morning Racer, who shot a great feature video from Shadyside Dragway that is all about the A/Gas class. These are the heavy hitters and he not only catches the on track action, but also interviews and more. Check it out.

Video: Awesome Action From Lions Drag Strip Back In 1966 – Wheels Up, Tire Smoking Fun

Now this video is AWESOME. Taken from the stands by a fan in what is reported to be 1966, it captures plenty of full quarter mile tire smoking runs and more importantly it captures some of the awesome early funny cars in action. Most notably for us is the wild, nearly uncontrollable A/FX Falcon of Hubert Platt. This thing acts like a modern radial car with its multiple wheelies per run. The home-built creation was basically constructed with the main motivation being spite because Platt was angry Ford had not stepped up and supported his efforts. The 427 powered Falcon was designed and built to ruin as many race days for Fords, Chevrolets, and Dodges as it possibly could.

Dick Harrell’s screaming red Nova is seen in the video as well. Many of the dragster runs as shown in “slow motion”. We’re not sure if that is an effective digitizing the 8mm film or what but it is really nice to watch the smoke funnel off the rear tires during their runs.

It becomes evident why people latched onto the early funny cars and every other iteration as they evolved. The dragsters do not present near the show “billboard” that the full body cars do and the show element of the A/FXers sure seems stronger as well.

Now, the last thing and the elephant in the room. Every freaking time we run photos of an event we hear people say, “There’s no one in the stands, drag racing is dying all over America. When I was a kid the track was packed every day, week, month, and year. It is a sad state of affairs. We sat and watched everything! Test and tunes had the places jammed!”

On this day Lions is a ghost town. Its the same today as it was then. Some shows are homer runs and some shows aren’t. 52 years go or 52 minutes ago, the game remains the same.
